While all of these services may be available, some do come at a small price. For example, there is a charge for resurfacing rotors. However that charges very small at around $10 (compared too much more for new rotors). There is also a nominal charge to rent the bay at $8 per hour. This price includes a car lift and almost any professional-grade tool you would possibly need for doing extensive car repair, including air tools! There may be additional charges for consumable tools such as a tool that uses a cut-off blade that wears down over the course of a job. But don't worry, these charges are very small at around $2 or less.
As part of your membership to the skills shop, you are able to dispose of scrap metals and fluids such as oil and brake fluid after your repairs.
I have been using this Auto Repair Center since around 2003. In the past almost-15 years, I have done repair work such as exhaust work, brake line and caliper work, suspension, new tires and wheels as well as simple oil changes (among other work, can't list it all!). I have saved in excess of $10,000 doing work myself!
Hard to find good help. The one old guy can't do it all himself
Outstanding place to work on your vehicle. They have a very friendly and helpful staff. This year alone my family saved over $1200 in auto repairs.
In addition to the tools, there are approximately three or four staff members around who offer professional insight to the job you are doing. While they are not really supposed to actually do the repair work for you - remember that's why you are there - they are certainly willing to help out and get their hands dirty to help you through a problem point if you're stuck. They also have a computer that includes repair manuals for most vehicles and years. This can be particularly helpful.
Overall, this is definitely a five-star experience. I have saved tens of thousands of dollars and car repair over the years. I cannot recommend Auto skills shop strongly enough! The only downside is that they are currently only open 3 days per week: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Everyone is very helpful!!! I go here for all three of my vehicles to save money. Great Place!!!
I am no expert mechanic, but I certainly enjoy doing auto repair work myself. Who doesn't like saving money?! The Fort Meade Auto Skills Center offers the do-it-yourself home repair person the opportunity to do just that: save money!
They also have a number of services including mounting new tires/wheels as well as balancing. If you're doing brake work and wish to salvage a rotor that's still within specification, they do offer resurfacing capability. They also have a parts cleaning service; the list goes on! If you are skilled at welding, they do have welding equipment available (however, you are not able to actually weld on the vehicle. All parts must be welded in a separate area and then brought to the vehicle for installation).
Good place to work on your car. The only thing I don't like is you can't use your own tools.
